Any player that reaches 150 at bats or 50 innings pitched can be retained as a protected prospect by the team that has the rights to home. The contract for the player is $.4M per year for 4 years starting with the season following the year he meets the minimum requirements. So a player that reached 150 at bats in 2010 can be retained until the end of the 2014 season The chart below should be used to determine length of protection
2010 thru 2014 2011 thru 2015 2012 thru 2016 2013 thru 2017
