Each off-season, there are always a number of players who have had their contracts expire. These players naturally become free agents and, as such, will be placed into the free agent draft for the next season. We currently use Cot's as the official source for contract and salary information. Cot's- mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/To protect against the loss of all free agents in a particular calendar year, a GM will be granted to ability to name 2 Free Agent Exemptions (Franchise Players) You will also be able to protect all qualified "minor league" players and also be allowed to protect your qualified "prospect" players as well. Prospect players are defined as players who are engaged in the 4 year Prospect status. Following the end of season, owners have the option to retain players do arbitration in real life or release them to the free agency pool with out penalty. Arbitration players can be retained without using a free agent exemption. If an arbitration player is retained owners are responsible for ensuring an appropriate roster regarding salary cap and 40 players.

If a protected prospect Players on your roster signs a long term contract with a MLB team, you as the owner of that team may choose to switch that players protected contract to his MLB contract which could lengthen th amount of years that the owner would have the player. This would be considered a free agent exemption move and would've reduce the number of exemptions available to that team by one.
